Abroad

Thinking about going abroad next fall. Nearly everyone I have talked to about studying abroad (my parents, my advisor, peers) has been very adamant I go, but I'm still a bit hesitant. I'm terrified that my language skills won't be up to par, that I'll be lonely, and that I'll miss out on things happening back home. Have any of you guys studied abroad? How was the experience? If you haven't studied abroad, do you have any advice for my situation?

Everyday Music! I don't normally go into stores without intending to buy something specific, but I will go into Everyday Music and browse for hours.

I really wish there was one in Salem :( All of our music stores are kinda expensive and have limited selection.

Man, today could have gone better. I got a parking ticket (I thought you couldn't get parking tickets on Sunday?) and my car is starting to act in ways I am not comfortable with.

Summer's drawing to a close - only a week more of my summer job! I've been working from 8-4:30 every weekday since May, so it'll be nice to have a more sane schedule. It's been fun living on my own, although the accompanying adult responsibilities can be a drag. ("Rent? What the hell?") This is really dorky, but it's so nice to go grocery shopping and cook for myself. The neighborhood I've been living in these past weeks is pretty quiet and overall really pleasant. It reminds me a lot of Portland neighborhoods - older houses, Our next door neighbors are pretty interesting. They're a pretty standard all-American family (two parents, two kids), but they're pretty heavily into body modification. The wife runs a piercing shop and has numerous tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications (including a split tongue). The husband acts as a human guinea pig for the wife - she tries out new piercing ideas on him, including an implant in his arm which he can screw attachments into.

I gotta admit, I'm going to really miss living in this house, in this neighborhood. I won't have my own bedroom in the apartment I'm moving into this fall and will in fact be sharing one bedroom with two other dudes. On the other hand, unlike my current living situation, I'm pretty sure my future apartment won't have walls full of lead.

High hopes for next semester!

A thought:

I should really start updating this thing more, especially considering it's summer! Poor, neglected LJ :(

Dear Microsoft,

May I inquire as to why I have to reboot your Windows XP operating system after I:
  • Install Office software?
  • Install Internet Explorer 7?
  • Think about installing software?
  • Look at the computer?
  • Sneeze?
Regards,

!!!

I just found out that a bunch of my favorite musicians are playing in Salem this summer over a three day festival! I really want to go, but a. It's pretty pricey ($100+) b. I've never been to a music festival before, and perhaps most importantly c. I don't have anybody to go with.

I need to figure this out quickly.

Sobriety, part two

As a follow up to this post: Since that post, I've moved into a new dorm. I hadn't heard much about that girl until about a month ago, when I asked a friend about her. Apparently, she's dropped out from Willamette, and is now going to bartending school up in Portland. Reports are that she's very happy. Go figure.

Woah.

I have a final paper (a short one, no less) on one of the favorite movies of all time (The Matrix), but I have so thoroughly checked out from this school year that I just can't muster the motivation to finish it.

I just wanna kick it at the school for another week or so without any academic obligations. Is that too much to ask?

October Sky

Have you seen the movie October Sky? If you have, what did you think of it? According to multiple sources, it is a "boy movie;" I want to test that hypothesis.

Summer '09

It seems that I'll be sticking around Salem this summer, for better or worse. I got a full-time job working at my school, doing manual labor and tech-related things.

Still not sure how I feel about this. I had a really hard time finding a summer job last year, so this is definitely a relief. It'll also be kind cool to be living a bit more independently - i.e., away from my parents, paying rent on my own, etc..

However, Salem is a really shitty city. I won't really know anybody here, and there won't be much to do. The hours are more than I have ever worked before. And I love Portland in the summer.

Let's see how it goes.

Economics is horseshit. Between my microeconomics class and everything that has been happening in the world of finance recently (oh hello recession), I'm beginning to believe more and more that economics is nothing more than smoke and mirrors; a very poor social science masquerading as a "hard" science. It may just be a combination of me disliking my micro class and Jon Stewart ripping Jim Cramer a new one.

(Also hello new default userpic. Please stay a while.)

First Week of the Obama Presidency

So far, so good.

Obama Panorama

Some photographer took a huge panorama shot of Tuesday's Inauguration with ridiculous detail. You can zoom in, check out what almost every individual is doing (Yo-Yo Ma is taking a picture with his iPhone!), and even see government snipers in the background. Definitely worth checking out.

Oh hey there

President Obama.

I'll admit, I teared up a bit during his inaugural address. What can I say? The man's a powerful speaker.

I feel like such a wuss. It's been almost a week since I got my wisdom teeth removed and it still hurts enough for me to take oxycodone.

On the other hand, drugs!

Jan. 11th, 2009

oh oxycodone

I've never really taken many drugs. My general health is usually pretty good and I don't do recreational drugs in any form.

This whole oxycodone thing is really messing with me. I've never felt so lightheaded before, and I really don't like it :(

Jan. 10th, 2009

Teef

Got all four of my wisdom teeth out yesterday! The procedure itself wasn't bad at all. The worst part was being stuck with an IV - after that, I remember almost nothing. Thanks drugs!

Recovery time has been pretty quick. I can now eat pretty much whatever, except for things with seeds and anything out of a straw. Plus, I get a whole bottle of oxycodone to down. Again, thanks drugs!
